Two quarantined under court order

Two people who refused to be quarantined have been quarantined with a court order.

This is the first time a person has been quarantined under a court order during the current COVID-19 pandemic. A court order was issued on Monday to quarantine the two people who refused to be quarantined.

Following the declaration of a public health emergency in the Maldives in March, the Director-General of Public Health has been endowed with powers to enforce measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives. It includes deciding who to quarantine and placing islands as well as the entire Maldives on lockdown.

The public health emergency, which was initially declared from March 12 to April 12, has been extended until the end of this month,

The government has been quarantining all those who return to the Maldives from overseas, isolating those who display symptoms of COVID-19 and those who test positive for the virus.

At the moment there are 1471 people in quarantine facilities and 187 people in isolation facilities.
