The total number of people that tested positive for COVID-19 in the Maldives has reached 618.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Wednesday, 45 people tested positive for the virus. They are; 35 Bangladeshi nationals, 8 Maldivians, and 2 Indian nationals.
Following the detection of the first case of local transmission in the capital city of Male’ on April 15, positive cases have been on the rise in the archipelago. Last Thursday, a record number of 191 people tested positive in the Maldives. The country has recorded two COVID-19 related deaths thus far.
The novel coronavirus named as COVID-19 was first detected in Wuhan City of the Hubei province, China late December 2019. It was later declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The disease has infected over 3 million people around the world and killed nearly 260,000. While China has now managed to control transmission in the country, the infection has now reached 212 countries and territories.
