Deputy Speaker and Galolhu South MP Eva Abdulla on Saturday proposed to the parliament to conduct an audit on COVID-19 related expenditure and allocation of funds in combating COVID-19 pandemic in the Maldives.
The parliament’s Public Accounts Committee has prepared a report on the stimulus package implemented by the government to assist business ventures impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the report, the committee proposed to instruct more frequent reporting by the Auditor General Office.
The committee further proposed to monitor if COVID-19 expenditure and the financial assistance received from various parties are being spent as per the Public Accounts Act.
MP Eva proposed an amendment to the Public Accounts Committee’s report to conduct a quarterly financial audit on the COVID-19 related expenditures, loans obtained and the financial assistance received by the government from various parties.
12 parliament committees studied parliament’s Majority Leader, MP Ali Azim’s proposal for the parliament to play an advisory role for the government on various programmes and stimulus packages introduced by the government. Each committee has prepared a report proposing several suggestions for the government, and the parliament has passed eight reports thus far.
