Joint committee to study status of corruption, murder investigations

The parliament on Tuesday passed to formulate a joint committee on studying the status of investigations on the corruption case of Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC) and murder cases. The Joint Committee will be formed from among the Judiciary Committee and 241 Committee members of the parliament.

MP of Henveiru Uthuru constituency Ibrahim Muizz proposed the parliament to study the delay in investigating corruptions, murder cases, and other court cases. The issue was forwarded to Judiciary Committee and 241 Committee of the parliament. The Judiciary and 241 Committee held their meetings virtually on Monday night to discuss the way forward. The members of the two committees passed in their separate meetings to hold a joint meeting. Thus, both the committees’ chairpersons discussed and agreed to conduct a joint meeting.

The government has been criticised due to the delay in investigating the case of MMPRC’s corruption where billions in state funds were embezzled, and delays in the work of the two commissions that have been formed to investigate the cases of corruption and murders.

Only the former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has been sentenced thus far in relation to the MMPRC corruption. He was sentenced to five-year imprisonment after being found guilty of money laundering. The main suspects of the case, former Vice-president Ahmed Adeeb and, former MD of MMPRC, Ahmed Ziyath were sentenced during the administration of President Yameen. However, under the current regime, the upper courts had nullified the verdicts. Later, cases were filed against both of them over the issue but investigations of the cases have been ceased. The appeal case of President Yameen has also been halted due to COVID-19 pandemic.
