Elderly allowed outdoors during early morning hours

People above 60 years of age will be allowed to go out for walks and fresh air, the Health Protection Agency has announced.

The Director General of Public Health on Thursday brought amendments to the directives on movement restriction under the eases granted on the lockdown measures imposed on the Male' area in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, people above 60 years of age are given the option to go out for walks with permits between 5 am and 8 am.

Other eases granted include extending essential needs permits to accomodate three adults per household twice a week for a duration of two hours, with no further zone restrictions. Taxis can resume services with necessary precautions, and goods can be carried between Male' and industrial island Thilafushi. Industrial work can be carried out with the necessary permits and shops and private offices can re-open with permits. Construction work can also be resumed after obtaining necessary permits, and the banking hours have also been increased.

However, no vehicles will be allowed to operate in Male', Hulhumale' and Villingili, and public spaces will continue to be off limits. Public transport services between Male', Hulhumale' and Villimale' will continue to be halted and entry and exit from Male', Villimale, Thilafushi, Hulhumale' and Gulhifalhu will still be restricted.

The Maldives has recorded over 1500 positive cases of COVID-19 thus far. The country recorded its first case of local transmission on April 14.
