COVID-19: Decline in positive cases not due to under-testing

National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) on Saturday said that the numbers of positive cases of COVID-19 are declining but is not due to under-testing.

In a news brief held by NEOC on Saturday night, the government’s spokesperson assigned to provide information on OCVID-19 issues Mabrook Azeez denied rumours that the number of tests being conducted has been reduced to decrease the number of recorded positive cases.

Mabrook said although the number of positive cases are lesser, NEOC is not taking matters lightly and does not consider that the virus has been eliminated. He detailed that hundreds of samples are collected every day, and tested at the government’s main hospital IGMH, main private hospital ADK, and at the police laboratory.

8-day positive cases and samples collected:
• May 30: 653 samples, 81 positive cases
• May 31: 557 samples, 101 positive cases
• June 1: 835 samples; 56 positive cases
• June 2: 704 samples, 12 positive cases
• June 3: 618 samples, 09 positive cases
• June 4: 685 samples; 22 positive cases
• June 5: 957 samples, 11 positive cases
• June 6: 725 samples, 18 positive cases

Mabrook added that now that some of the lockdown measures are relieved, a number of tests are conducted to understand the situation of the community. Therefore, efforts are underway to maintain testing capacity at the same level or increase capacity every day, said Mabrook.
