Housing Minister Aminath Athifa has resigned from her post. A reliable source has confirmed that she resigned due to health condition.
According to the source, she informed her resignation to the president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday. However, her resignation has not been officially announced.
Athifa has been getting treatment for a serious illness for a few years. She had been seeking treatment for the illness overseas when she joined the reform movement. At the time of her assignment as the housing minister, her condition had improved significantly.
She resigned at a time when the MP of Machchangoalhi has sent a letter to the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, requesting to pursue a no-confidence motion against her. As per the letter, she has failed to fulfil the government’s pledges, and requested to terminate her from the designation through the parliament.
Athifa is married to popular Maldivian singer Umar Zahir and is the sister of the former Attorney General Azima Shakoor. Athifa represents former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom’s Maldives Reform Movement (MRM).
This is the second minister that is resigning in this administration. A few months ago, former Gender Minister Shidhatha Shareef resigned from her post amid parliamentary pressure.
