The Maldives on Friday recorded 27 new cases of COVID-19.
According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the newly tested positive cases are of 14 Maldivians and 13 foreigners. This brings the total number of positive cases to 2003.
Currently, there are 800 active cases, and at present, there are 742 people in isolation facilities and 356 people in quarantine facilities. The country has recorded eight fatalities; four locals and four Bangladeshi nationals.
The capital Male’ region has been placed on lockdown since April 15 with the detection of the first case of local transmission. Since then, the number of positive cases kept surging until mid-May. Following the decrease in the number of daily positive cases, the government has announced the lockdown placed on the capital Male’ region will be lifted on June 15.
The country is now preparing for a ‘new normal’.
