COVID-19: Police urge not to defy authorities' instructions

Police have stated that they have received reports of groups planning to organise gatherings in the capital Male’ region, and requested not to hold such gatherings against the instructions of Health Protection Agency (HPA).

The police said even if lockdown measures imposed in the Greater Male’ area as a precaution against COVID-19 are relieved, gatherings of more than three people will not be allowed as per the instruction of the Director General of Public Health.

However, the authority has received reports of such gathering being planned despite warnings not to defy the instructions of HPA, said the police. Therefore, the police urged the public not to go against the instructions amid the current public health emergency.

A political group has scheduled to have a protest near the Parliament House, The People’s Majlis, on Sunday morning. This is the first time such a gathering has been scheduled in the capital Male’ after the relaxation of lockdown measures. Movement is allowed between 0500 to 2200 hrs under the relaxed measures.

The protest is organised by a left-wing group known as “ Navaa Navai”. The demonstration has been planned due to the parliament’s inaction on the socioeconomic impacts the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the public. The reform movement has organised some political activities previously as well.
