Peoples' Majlis halts catering services for parliament members

The parliament has temporarily suspended the catering services provided for parliamentarians.

A staffer employed at the parliament house recently tested positive for COVID-19, after which 22 employees of the office have been placed in quarantine.

Speaking at Monday's parliament sitting, Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed said several staff who are involved in the provision of meals are among those quarantined, and the parliament is therefore suspending the catering service temporarily. However, all parliamentarians can bring their meals from home, said the Speaker. All food items will be checked before it is allowed to be brought in to the building, added Nasheed.

Parliamentary sittings were held virtually for about one and a half when the first case of local transmission was detected in the capital Male’. However, the sittings are now held at the parliament chamber. Speaker Nasheed highlighted that the parliamentary sittings are held at the chambers after taking the necessary safety measures.
