CSC: Three members resign; one dismissed

President of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Ali Shameem and members Zakariyya Hussain and Shaheed Mohamed have resigned from the commission.

During Monday’s parliament sitting, Speaker Mohamed Nasheed said the parliament has been informed of Shameem and Zakariyya’s resignation. While the parliament was scheduled to vote on the dismissal of four CSC members, their names will no longer be included among those whose dismissal are being sought, said Nasheed. Shaheed’s resignation followed soon after.

The Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions proposed to dismiss Shameem as well as CSC members Shaheed Mohamed, Zakariyya Hussain and Ibrahim Shaheeq. After the resignation of three members, the parliament voted to dismiss Ibrahim Shaheeq with 48 members voting in favour of the dismissal. No members voted against the dismissal.

Only member Fathimath Amira’s dismissal was not sought from among the five members of the commission. Amira is the aunt of Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam who chairs the committee on independent institutions. While the committee voted on making a decision regarding seeking Amira’s dismissal, five out of the nine members who voted on the matter agreed not to dismiss Amira. Rozaina had abstained from the committee discussions regarding Amira, and the discussions were chaired by deputy chair, Mikail Ahmed Naseem.

The cabinet of the current administration has alleged that the CSC has not been cooperating with the ministries. All ministers were summoned to the committee on independent institutions to research the matter; the first time all cabinet ministers were summoned to a single committee to date.
