Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said the presidential commissions formed to investigate murders and corruption are functionless and has to be dissolved.
After concluding debate on an emergency proposal submitted by MP Abdulla Jabir, Speaker Nasheed said the two commissions have been formed to serve justice for murder victims and recover funds and assets lost from the state through corruptions.
Despite passing an act for the commissions and handing over their responsibilities, it is hard to believe that they have been adequately fulfilling their responsibilities. If the commissions are not functioning properly, they have to be annulled, said Speaker Nasheed.
Speaker Nasheed further said there is no point in wasting expenditure on inoperable commissions at a time of economic downturn as the government has budget constraints due to COVID-19 pandemic. He added that the parliament will explore the issue.
While Nasheed has stated hat he believes the presidential commissions have to be dissolved, he has sharply criticised the commissions in past sittings. Even then, Nasheed had stated that the commissions were almost defunct and had stopped their work. The commissions deny Speaker Nasheed’s accusations.
According to reports, there is a difference of opinion among President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Speaker Mohamed Nasheed over the issue of presidential commissions. The president wishes to complete the investigations and proceed with the cases.
