The Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) has decided not to file charges against those who violated the lockdown measures imposed in capital Male’.
Male’ city was placed on lockdown in April as a precautionary measure against COVID-19. Several people flouted lockdown rules and were fined by the police. The police forwarded their cases to the PG for charging. Charges were raised against some offenders in the past.
However, the cases will be dropped, and no charges will be raised against the rest of the offenders, PG said on Tuesday. The office has instructed relevant authorities to collect the fines issued for violations, said PG.
The authority said it decided not to pursue charges as many were forced to flout the rules out of necessity. Seeking criminal charges and creating a criminal record for the offense is not in the good of the society, said PG.
