India extends US$ 500 mln financial package for development of second overwater bridge

The Foreign Ministry has announced that the Government of India is providing a financial package of 500 million US Dollars for the Greater Malé Connectivity Project.

The decision was confirmed by India’s Minister of External Affairs of India, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar during a Digital Video Conference held Thursday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the package includes both loans and grants. However, no further details were shared. The announcement comes while the current government has heavily criticized the former government for borrowing from China for the development of the country’s first overwater bridge connecting Male’ and reclaimed suburbs Hulhumale’

The new project will connect Malé, Villingili, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu, via bridges and causeways of a total length of 6.695 kilometers. Once completed, the project will be the single largest infrastructure project in the Maldives.
