16 arrested in connection to hijacking incident released; police seek appeal

The Court has released 16 suspects who were arrested in connection to the alleged hijacking of a fishing vessel last week.

According to the crew of the fishing vessel ‘Faskuri’, a group of thirty men armed with sharp objects boarded the vessel late last Sunday and threatened the captain of the vessel using knives. According to them, the men demanded the boat travel to a destination of their choice, and threatened the rest of the crew aboard the vessel to follow their instructions. 16 people were arrested, although all 16 suspects have now been released after being presented to the court to decide on their remand.

The police said a request will be made at the Prosecutor General’s Office to appeal the decision. The police also requested the PGO to identify if any unlawful or procedural issues are linked to their release.
