Kandinma death: Resort operation permit temporarily revoked

The resort operation permit issued to Kandinma Maldives has been temporarily revoked as authorities investigate the death of an employee of the resort.

An employee working at Kandinma Resort passed away last week after being transferred to Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo Hospital for treatment after his health deteriorated. He had displayed symptoms of COVID-19 before testing positive for the virus. His death was declared as the 38th COVID-19 death in the Maldives.

The family and several co-workers of the deceased have alleged negligence on the part of Kandinma Resort in providing the necessary health care to the man prior to his death. According to co-workers, the man had been ill for a long time and requested the management to allow him to travel on multiple occasions, and all requests were rejected by the management.

A Rapid Response Team from HPA was dispatched to Kandinma Resort after the deceased man tested positive for COVID-19. The team investigated his death, as well as the resort and the hospital’s actions and responses in dealing with the patient. The team’s findings were shared with the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru who then requested Maldives Police Service to investigate the case four days ago. The police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the case. The Human Rights Commission of Maldives as well as the Parliament is looking into the matter.
