The Maldives has won the title of ‘World’s Leading Destination’ at the prestigious World Travel Awards. This is the first time the archipelago won the title over the past 16 years.
The ceremony, often described as the ‘Oscar Awards' of the tourism industry was held virtually on Friday night. Maldives won the award by competing against 22 other countries, including Greece, India and Mauritius.
Tourism Minister, Dr. Ahmed Mausoom said the Maldives was able to attain the award as a result of the government’s well-established policies, and efforts to continue marketing the country during a challenging time.
In addition to the ‘World Leading Destination’ title, over 50 resorts were nominated for titles under 13 different categories. Out of these, seven Maldivian resorts, companies and hotels won the awards. They are:
World’s Leading New Restaurant 2020: Emerald Maldives Resort and Spa
World’s Leading Luxury Island Resort 2020: The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort
World’s Leading Luxury Island Villas 2020: Baros Maldives
World’s Leading Honeymoon Resort 2020: JA Manafaru
World’s Leading Water Villa Resort 2020: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa
World’s Leading Seaplane Operator 2020: Trans Maldivian Airways
World’s Leading Airport Resort 2020: Hulhule’ Island Hotel
The Maldives also won four titles in the Indian Oean category. They are:

Leading Cruise Destination
Leading Dive Destination
Leading Indian Ocean Destination
This is the 13th year that the Maldives has won Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination Award.
