42 percent increase in traffic movements, busy days for main int'l airport

Maldives’ main international airport, Velana International Airport is experiencing a high influx of flight arrivals ahead of the New Year.

While the traffic record has increased by 42 percent, some flights have had to hover over the airport for over two hours while waiting for the runway to clear over the past few days, according to some reports.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Tuesday said 576 flight movements were recorded the previous day, with 5,845 tourist arrivals. The second-most number of flight movements were recorded on December 12, with 405 traffic movements and 4,179 arrivals recorded that day.

21 international arrivals currently fly to the Maldives. According to statistics released by the Tourism Ministry, 132,803 tourists have visited the Maldives post lockdown. A total of 515,650 tourists visited the Maldives thus far this year.
