Opposition receives green light to hold rally on Saturday

Authorities have given permission for the opposition coalition to hold a rally on Saturday night.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)’s Office on Thursday, Deputy President of the Peoples’ National Congress (PNC), Ibrahim Sujau said both the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Male’ City Council have given the green light to hold the gathering.

Sujau said while preparations are underway, the security aspects of the gathering have been discussed with Maldives Police Service. A ‘special surprise’ is in the works for Saturday’s gathering, he added.

Invitation to attend the gathering has been extended to fishermen, farmers and taxi drivers, and those working towards their rights. Special invitations have been delivered to fishing vessels as well as farmers who occupy stalls at the local market.

Sujau said the police have instructed all attendees to park their vehicles in the parking zone north of King Salam Mosque. Vehicles parked in the carnival area, where the event will be held, are being cleared by the police, said Sujau. Measures will be taken during the event as per HPA guidelines, he added.
