Dr. Muizzu criticizes gov't performance as essential needs remain unmet

The PPM-PNC presidential candidate, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has heavily criticized President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government.

Speaking at a campaign rally at Kaafu Gaafaru on Tuesday, Dr. Muizzu said he observed many basic needs unfulfilled in every island he visits for his campaign, so much so that he is left questioning whether the current government has made any tangible achievements or improvements. As President Solih's five-year term comes to an end, the unavailability of basic services on islands reflects the failure of the government, he said.

“I don’t know what the government did,” he said, questioning the government’s claims of providing essential services in the islands.

Addressing some of the challenges faced by Gaafaru, Dr. Muizzu pledged to address issues related to erosion and waste management if elected.

Muizzu's pledges for Gaafaru

- Further development of the health center
- Construction of a multi-purpose hall and additional classroom at Gaafaru School
- Construction of a sports arena and youth center

Acknowledging Gaafaru's significance as a fishing island, Dr. Muizzu referenced former President Abdulla Yameen's 2013 manifesto, which featured major fisheries projects. Dr. Muizzu assured that he would follow suit, ensuring that the price of fish caught by fishermen remains at no less than MVR 20 per kilogram. He also pledged to establish a national register of fishermen and introduce a specialized agency to promote the fisheries sector. Furthermore, he committed to expanding the space and resources at the existing 25-tonne ice plant in Gaafaru

Muizzu noted the need to expand the Gaafaru harbour to further develop the island's fishing sector. He asured that the harbour will be developed as requested by the people.
