Fifteen resorts to open this year

The Tourism Ministry has announced that fifteen new resorts will be opened in the Maldives this year.

Statistics shared with AVAS by the ministry showed that fifteen new resorts are lined up to be opened this year. However, the details of the resorts were not shared by the ministry.

It has been reported that the resorts currently in development include at least 13 brand new resorts. They are:
• Siyam World
• Madifushi Private Island
• Address Madivaru
• Cocogiri Island Resort
• The Chedi Kuda Villingili
• Le Meridian Maldives Resort and Spa
• Patina Maldives Fari Island
• Ritz Carlton Fari Island
• Zazz Escape Maldives Resort
• Maniya Faru Resort
• Gran Melia Huravee
• Tolarno Maldives Kunaa Vashi Resort

Among these, seven resorts will be operated and managed by renowned global hotel chains. One of them is Le Meridian Maldives Resort and Spa, which is being developed in Lh. Atoll. This resort is the first resort being opened in the Maldives under the ‘Le Meridian’ brand of Marriot International. The resort is expected to open in September.

According to statistics, five tourism properties were opened in the Maldives during 2020. However, the development of several resorts are ongoing, including resorts being developed on lagoons that have been dredged for tourism purposes. 85 resorts are still awaiting completion. The government has brought changes to the Tourism Act in order to facilitate the completion of the resorts. Three new tourism properties have also been opened for investment by the current government.
