Desginating council seats for women not unconstitutional: High Court

The High Court has ruled that designating 33 percent of local council seats for women is not unconstitutional.

A case was filed at the High Court by former youth wing leader of Jumhooree Party, Moosa Anwar, stating that the decision to reserve council seats for women is unconstitutional. In his case, he said that the decision to reserve seats for women violates some rights assured by the constitution.

The High Court bench that presided over the case ruled that the decision to allot seats for women was not unconstitutional. The bench comprised of Judge Haathif Hilmy, Mohamed Niyaz, Ali Sameer, Abdul Raoof Ibrahim and Hussain Shaheed.
