Shutting down borders and closing schools not wise, says Nasheed

The Speaker of the Parliament and former president of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that it would not be wise to close the country’s borders and schools at this time.

In a tweet posted on Tuesday morning, Nasheed said it would be unwise to close the country;s borders and schools at this time. He called on the country’s citizens to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at the earliest He stressed on the need to get vaccinated to bring the spread of COVID-19 under control. He added that this is not the time for the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and the Health Ministry to introduce new policies.

Nasheed was one of the first state dignitaries to receive the initial dose of the COVID-19 vaccine when the country initiated its vaccination drive on Monday. According to the Health Emergency Operations Centre, 282 individuals received the COVISHIELD vaccine on the first day of the drive.

The Maldives recorded a record number of positive cases earlier on Monday. While 215 cases were registered over the past 24 hours, 152 cases were identified in the Greater Male’ Region. This includes school students and staff. However, the Education Ministry has announced that it would continue in-class learning as per the guidelines set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA).
