The Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) has stated that over 800 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the Maldives.
The Maldives initiated its national COVID-19 vaccine drive on Monday. Currently, only the COVISHIELD vaccine manufactured in India under a special license from AstraZeneca is being administered in the Maldives.
According to HEOC, 880 individuals have received the vaccine during the first two days of the vaccine drive. Out of these, 666 individuals received the vaccine in the Greater Male’ Area.
India has gifted 100,000 doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine to the Maldives. This is enough to administer full doses of the vaccine to 50,000 people. The government has signed an agreement with AstraZeneca to procure 700,000 doses of the vaccine. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the government hopes to vaccinate the entire population against COVID-19 within the next six months.
