Current wave of infections the worst to date, warns HEOC

The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has warned the public that the country is currently experiencing the most dangerous situation due to COVID-19 thus far.

A tweet posted by Spokesperson of the centre, Dr. Nazla Rafeeq said the current wave of COVID-19 infections in the Maldives is the worst wave the country is experiencing until now. Describing the current situation, Nazla said hospitalisations are alarmingly high and that only a handful of beds are remaining to treat patients. She called on the public to help control the virus by adhering to the Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s guidelines.

The number of COVID-19 cases have been increasing dramatically over the past few weeks. While the number of hospitalisations is currently above 200, 2,302 cases are active.

The government on Friday introduced new restrictions, including extending the duration of a vehicle ban in the Greater Male’ Area. The vehicle ban is now effective between 6pm and 6 am. Gatherings of over ten people have also been restricted, and schools will be holding classes for grades 1 to 6 online.
