An agreement has been signed between the governments of Maldives and India to develop a Coast Guard harbour and dockyard at Uthuru Thilafalhu naval base.
The agreement was signed by Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi on behalf of the Maldives government, and by India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr S Jaishankar on behalf of the Indian government.
The development of the harbour and dockyard in Uthuru Thila Falhu were included under the Defence Action Plan signed between India and Maldives in 2016 during former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s presidency. According to the Defence Action Plan, a naval harbour with communication equipment and resources, radar services and training facilities will be developed at the base.
The project will be carried out in two phases. The construction of the harbour and dockyard will be completed within the first three years.
