COVAX donates 12,000 vaccine doses

COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) program has donated 12,000 doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine to the Maldives.

COVAX, is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines led by the World Health Organization. Maldives has participated in the program, under which the archipelago will receive free vaccines enough for 20 percent of the country’s population.

The Health Ministry Sunday said COVAX has donated 12,000 doses of vaccines to the Maldives. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih thanked the facility for its generous donation.

The facility donated 100,000 syringes to the Maldives earlier this month.

The Maldives kicked off its COVID-19 vaccination campaign on February 1st, after India donated 100,000 doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine. Since then, over 150,000 people have received the vaccine’s first dose.
