Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed has stated that the newly elected Mayor of Male' City, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu from opposing Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) is a capable leader.
Nasheed openly criticized Dr. Muizzu on multiple platforms during the campaign for the Local Council Election held Saturday.
Speaking at a press conference held at main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party's office, Nasheed changed his tune and described Muizzu as a person of good character and a capable and determined individual. He stated that the government would cooperate with Muizzu on any work undertaken by him as mayor that would benefit the people of the city.
Nasheed also spoke regarding MDP candidate for Male' City Mayor, Anas Abdul Sattar. Nasheed said Anas won the mayoral ticket in the party's primary, and said although he suffered defeat in the election, his political future remains bright. Nasheed said he believes Anas to be a capable individual.
Nasheed further said although MDP suffered defeat in Male' City in Saturday's election, it will not have any affect on the decentralized governance system. The system will continue to remain in place, and the central government would respect any decision made by the city councils, said Nasheed.
