Pres Solih expresses concern over India's COVID-19 situation

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has expressed concern over the COVID-19 situation in India.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday, President Solih said he was saddened and concerned for the neighboring nation as it battles a new wave of the virus. He expressed the Maldives' solidarity with the people of India and said the country is encouraged by the efforts undertaken by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian authorities to ease the situation.

India remains the country with the second-most number of COVID-19 cases. While the country has registered over 18.3 million positive cases, its official death toll has surpassed 200,000. The country's situation has been deteriorating over the past couple of days. 379,459 positive cases were registered over the past 24 hours alone, the country's highest single-day tally thus far. The country's health care system is struggling to cope with the situation. Several states are running out of medical oxygen and other supplies.
