Fisheries Minister dismissed amid cabinet reshuffle

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has dismissed Fisheries Minister, Zaha Waheed.

Zaha, who was appointed as the Fisheries Minister on a slot given to ruling coalition partner Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), was informed of her dismissal on Monday night via a phone call from the Chief of Staff at the President's Office, Ali Zahir.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih recently announced plans to reshuffle the cabinet and informed ruling coalition partners of his intent via letter and phone. The President told coalition partners that some cabinet ministers are unable to fulfill their responsibilities and that the citizens are concerned over their failure to carry out their responsibilities. The government on Monday stated that the President is in discussion with coalition partners regarding the reshuffle. Speaking at a press conference held by the President's Office, Spokesperson for the President's Office Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said the President had acknowledged that the outcome of the recently held local council election also indicate that the citizens wish for changes.

"The president is currently in discussion with coalition partners regarding a reshuffle. Issues of government leaders is one of the many aspects that need to be taken into account in bringing changes to how the government is run, while the cabinet is a sub point that follows," said Mabrook

However, several political parties have denied that any such discussions are taking place between the parties and the government.
