Nasheed off life support, promises to come back stronger

Family of Speaker of the Parliament and former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he is off life support.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital Thursday night after he sustained several injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he remains in the Intensive Care Unit.

Nasheed's family Saturday said he is now off life support and breathing on his own. The doctors are very happy with his recovery progress, said the family. The family was able to meet Nasheed and exchange a few words with him, during which Nasheed said he was doing well and promised to come back stronger, they said.

Two people have been arrested in connection the blast.

The police on Friday released the image of a person believed to be a suspect connected to the blast. While the police have confirmed that two people have been arrested, it is not clear whether the man in the image were among the arrested.

The police announced two arrests while the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed had earlier revealed that four individuals related to the blast have been identified by authorities. One person was arrested from a residence named G. Fehidhoadhi located on Alikilegefaanu Magu in Male' city. The second person was arrested from No.4 street of Rabarugas Magu in Hulhumale. The police are currently searching premises in both Male' and Hulhumale'.

The police have asked the public not to share pictures and videos of the blast. Such actions may hinder the investigation and also bring grief to the victims of the blast, said the police
