COVID-19: Over 50 percent of tourism workers fully vaccinated

Over 50 percent of employees working in the tourism sector have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Vaccination updates shared by the Tourism Ministry up to May 11 show the vaccinated percentage was at 48 percent. The percentage would have crossed 50 percent by now, officials from the ministry and other government entities have said.

According to statistics, the most number workers are employed in the tourism sector. While 44,954 people are employed in the sector, 21,332 people are locals.

The Tourism Ministry kicked off a special campaign, "I am Vaccinated" on February 5 to vaccinate all tourism sector employees. Over 90 percent of tourism employees have received the first jab out of the two doses. The Tourism Ministry considers those working at the ministry as tourism employees.

Out of resort workers, 39,440 workers have received the COVID-19 vaccine thus far. 306 people in the guest house sector have received the vaccine while 220 people working on yachts and liveaboards have also received the vaccine. 70 hotel employees and 64 performing artists as well as 25 employees from travel agencies and 67 ministry officials have received the vaccine to date. This amounts to 40,192 tourism sector employees.

While a total of 302,097 people have received both doses of the vaccine in the Maldives, 139,890 people have received the first shot.
