Former Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has taken his oath as the new mayor of Male' City.
The mayor and new council members' oaths were administered by High Court Chief Judge Haathif Hilmy in a virtual ceremony held Monday.
Muizzu, who is also the Deputy Leader of opposing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) contested against main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s candidate Anas Abdul Sattar and independent candidate Alhan Fahmy for the Mayor seat. Muizzu won 12,470 votes while Anas came second with 7,436 votes. Dr. Muizzu's historical win is the largest defeat MDP has had to suffer in Male' City in the last 11 years.
PPM won 11 seats on the Male' City Council while MDP was able to attain five seats on the council. Ruling coalition partner, Jumhooree Party managed to secure one seat on the council.
Mayors for Addu City, Fuvahmulah City and Kulhudhuffushi CIty also took their oaths on Monday. Three members from MDP won all three mayoral seats. They are Mohamed Athif from Kulhuduffushi City, Ismail Rafeeq from Fuvahmulah City and Ali Nizar from Addu City.
