Maldives gov't to review suspension of tourist visa issuance

The Tourism Ministry has stated that the Maldives will review its temporary suspension of tourist visas for those traveling from South Asian Countries before the end of this month.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) on May 11th announced temporary suspension of tourists visas for those traveling to the Maldives from South Asian countries as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 amid a surge in infections. The suspension came into effect on 13th May.

A tweet posted by the Tourism Ministry on Monday said the government is optimistic of easing the temporary restrictions in early July. In this regard, the suspension will be reviewed later this month, said the ministry.

A large number of tourists visit the Maldives from India. While India is battling a devastating surge in COVID-19 infections, the tourism ministry had previously stated that the suspension of visa issuance to the Indian market would significantly affect the Maldives' tourism industry.
