Parliament to launch inquiry into May 6 terror attack

The Parliament has approved to conduct in inquiry into the May 6 terror attack that left Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed critically injured.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital after he sustained several injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male' City earlier this month. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he has since been airlifted to Germany for further treatment.

Hithadhoo South MP Mohamed Aslam during Monday night's parliament sitting proposed to launch an inquiry into the May 6 blast. The proposition was seconded by Fonadhoo MP Moosa Siraj. Speaking at the Parliament, MP Aslam said the security breaches which led to the attack on Nasheed must be identified, and that the Parliament's security must be improved. An parliamentary inquiry must also be launched to identify the steps that must be taken to ensure that such an incident does not recur in future, said Aslam,

49 members voted in favor of launching the inquiry in the vote that followed.
