PCR testing facilities will be established at four different locations across Maldives, the government has announced.
Speaking at a press conference held by the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC) on Sunday, government Spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said PCR testing facilities will be arranged in Laamu and Gaaf Dhaalu atoll in the north, and Raa and Lhaviyani a toll in central Maldives. Mabrook said the government hopes to establish the facilities within one month, although it is likely to take up to 45 days to finish the arrangements. Each facility will have the capacity to process 300 samples per day.
While hundreds of samples are collected all over Maldives every day, a bulk of the samples are sent to the capital, Male' as well as some hospitals for processing. However, delays of backlog are a main complaint.
