The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated that over 900 people were fined over the past 24 hours for flouting the COVID-19 measures implemented to curb the spread of the virus.
During a press conference held Monday, Spokesperson at the President's Office, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said a significant number of people continue to defy the restrictions implemented to ensure the safety of all citizens. While the measures currently in place have made day to day life difficult for the citizens, the duration for which the restrictions are implemented will have to be extended if the public continues to defy the rules, said Mabrook.
According to HEOC, 208 people were fined for not wearing a mask and another 631 people were fined for being outside during curfew hours. Action was taken against 74 businesses for providing services outside of the permitted hours. This includes cafes, gyms, saloons and shops. Those fined includes people who sought services from these establishments, said Mabrook.
A curfew is in place from 4:00 pm until 08:00 am in the Greater Male' Region. A special permit issued by the police is required to step outside during non-curfew hours.
