The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has stated that discussions are ongoing regarding the lifting of strict measures imposed in the Greater Male' Region due to a recent surge in COVID-19 infections.
Authorities implemented a strict curfew from 4:00 pm until 08:00 am in the Greater Male' region two weeks ago. A permit is required to step out during the remaining hours of the day. Two permits are issued by the police per household. The restrictions were extended for an additional week last Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference held by HEOC on Sunday, government Spokesperson, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez said discussions are ongoing regarding further restrictions that may be lifted when the current week ends. The government will provide maximum eases that would still ensure the safety of the society, said Mabrook. However, the eases have not been finalized thus far, and will be announced at the end of the week, he added.
The Maldives has registered 70,301 cases of COVID-19 and 197 deaths to date. The COVID-19 situation has been improving over the past few days with daily numbers falling from above 1000 to below 250.
