HPA gives green light to reopen gyms

The Health Emergency Operation Centre (HEOC) has permitted gyms in the Greater Male' Region to reopen.

According to HEOC, gyms can offer their services to individual customers between 5:30 am until 06:00 pm. However, it is not permitted to hold group sessions.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said although gyms can re-open, the guidelines set by the authority must be followed when offering services. A plan must be submitted to HPA that shows that the establishment is designed in such a way that services can be offered according to the guidelines. The establishments will then be inspected before permits are granted to resume services.

Authorities tightened restrictions imposed in Male' City around a month ago following an alarming surge in COVID-10 infections. A strict curfew was imposed in the Greater Male' Region from 04:00 pm until 08:00 am, and a special permit was required to be outside during non-curfew hours. However, the curfew hours were shortened after three weeks on June 15 after the daily number of cases began to decline. Since then, the curfew has been in effect from 04:00 pm until 04:00 am, and individual exercisers were allowed to exercise outside between 04:00 am and 08:00 am without requiring a police permit. Mosques were also opened to the public for individual worship.

HEOC on Tuesday announced that the curfew rules will be further scaled back to be in effect from 06:00 pm to 04:00 am from Wednesday onwards. The takeaway service hours for cafes and restaurants have also been extended until 6:00 pm. Eases in travel to islands have also been granted.
