Over 150 individuals were questioned in connection to the May 6 terror attack that targeted Parliament Speaker, Maldives Police Service has said.
Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital on the night of May 6 after he sustained several injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in Germany.
The police Sunday said 150 individuals have been questioned and over 200 CCTV footage was analyzed in the investigation on the attack. Speaking at a press conference held by the police, Superindentent of Police Hassan Shifau said the public is cooperating with the investigation, and that several CCTV footage was shared with the police by members of the public.
Shifau sad 25 locations have been searched to date and five people directly linked to the attack as well as 10 people believed to be extremists have been arrested. Shifau said CCTV analysis contributed to significant progress in the investigation and thanked the public for their contribution.
Shifau further said the police's forensic service is analyzing evidence collected from the incident scene and locations that were searched following the incident. The police are also receiving assistance from international partners in analyzing the evidence, he added. However, the details cannot be shared at this time, he said.
Superintendent of police Mohamed Basheer implored further public assistance in investigating the case. He instructed those with information regarding the events surrounding the May 6 attack to share the information with authorities.
