May 6 attack suspects stopped at sea days before blast

Maldives Police Service has disclosed that a speedboat on which two suspects involved in the terror attack that targeted Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed were traveling, was stopped by the police a few days before the attack.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital in Maldives' capital Male' on the night of May 6 after he sustained serious injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in Germany. Five arrests have been made in connection to the terror attack thus far. The police have released the identities of four out of the five suspects. They are Adhuham Ahmed (25), Mujaz Ahmed (21), Thahmeen Ahmed (32), and Ahmed Fathih (23).

The police disclosed that two of the suspects were stopped at sea after posts circulating on social media said the main suspect of the attack, Ahmed Adhuham Rasheed, and an additional suspect Thahmeen Mohamed interacted with the police on the night of May 1 while on a speedboat in Dhoonidhoo lagoon.

Referring to posts, the police said the speedboat was stopped in Hulhumale' lagoon after the marine police observed issues with the boat's navigation light. Those aboard the vessel were advised to fix the issues and the police then left the scene. The information was shared with the investigation team looking into the May 6 attack, the police said.
