Discussions ongoing regarding resuming congregational prayers

The Islamic Ministry has stated that discussions are ongoing regarding granting eases to the current restrictions which prohibit the performance of congregational prayers in Male' mosques.

Congregational prayers at mosques in the Greater Male' Region were suspended on May 12 following an alarming surge in COVID-19 infections. Mosques were later closed on May 26 as the situation further deteriorated. However, mosques were reopened for individual worship last Wednesday.

Islamic Minister Dr. Ahmed Zahir Ali told AVAS that while the ministry has partially eased the restrictions on mosques with the recent improvement in the COVID-19 situation, discussions are ongoing regarding resuming congregational prayers. However, a decision will be made only after ensuring that it is safe, and with permission from relevant authorities, said the minister.
