Nasheed to travel to UK for further treatment

Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed will be traveling to the United Kingdom to seek further treatment for injuries sustained in the May 6 blast.

Nasheed was taken to ADK Hospital in Maldives' capital Male' on the night of May 6 after he sustained serious injuries in an explosion near his residence in Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the blast occurred when an IED strapped to a motorcycle was detonated. Multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in Germany.

A statement issued by Nasheed's Office said Nasheed will be traveling to the United Kingdom on the recommendation of German doctors. In the statement, Nasheed's office noted the contribution of Nasheeds bodyguards, the team of doctors at ADK Hospital and the German hospitals in providing timely treatment to Nasheed, and thanked them for their services. It also expressed gratitude to the Maldivian Ambassador in Germany, the German government as well as the Maldivian Ambassador in the United Kingdon, the Maldives government, parliament members, and all well-wishers.
