Interconnection of Greater Male’ power grids completed, tested for first time

The Greater Male' Electricity Network has been completed and tested for the first time.

Utility company, STELCO said the network between Male' and Hulhumale' was synchronized and tested for the first time on Sunday, and that two engines have now been successfully added to the electricity grid. This will allow for the transfer of power between Male' and Hulhumale' and vice versa, said STELCO. Noting that new heights have been reached with the completion of the electricity network, STELCO said the network's benefits will now reach the people.

The Greater Male' interconnectivity project kicked off on July 23, 2016. The project is financed under a USD 104 million loan. A 50-watt power station with six 9-watt engines was established in Hulhumale' under the project. Additionally, a fuel farm with a storage capacity of 2,300 metric tonnes and a water desalination facility is also included under the project.
