'No calls from Pres Solih to check on Nasheed's health'

Bilehdhoo MP Ahmed 'Dhonbilaiy' Haleem has said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has not personally checked on Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed since he traveled to Germany for treatment following the May 6 blast.

The May 6 attack targeted Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed by detonating an IED as he entered his vehicle near his residence in capital Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the IED was strapped to a motorcycle parked nearby. Nasheed sustained serious injuries in the attack and multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital. Nasheed traveled to Germany on May 13, and he is now in the United Kingdom where he is recuperating from his injuries.

In a tweet posted on Friday, MP Haleem said Nasheed had shared with him that the President had not made any calls to him to check on his health. Haleem said he was sad and disappointed to hear such news from Nasheed. The tweet was re-tweeted by a pseudo account believed to belong to Nasheed himself as well as by several MPs representing the main-ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Nasheed's family members and MDP members, and former government officials during Nasheed's term also commented on the post, some peaking ill of the president. Some expressed that while President Solih and Nasheed remain the leaders of the state, both are the closest of friends and that they wish to see communication between the two leaders.

Nasheed has in the past conveyed messages to the public through Haleem. However, some members of the public have questioned the authenticity of Haleem's most recent claim.

Nasheed recently denounced political alignment with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in a series of Whatsapp messages sent to MDP's National Council Group earlier this month. However, Although the two leaders disagreed on political matters, President Solih would remain 'Ibu Dhombe', loosely translated as 'Uncle Ibu' to his children, Nasheed had said.
