Speaker of the Parliament and former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed's family has said he is expected to travel back to the Maldives from the United Kingdom next month.
A terror attack was carried out against Nasheed on May 6 by detonating an IED as he entered his vehicle near his residence in capital Male'. According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the IED was strapped to a motorcycle parked nearby. Nasheed sustained serious injuries in the attack and multiple critical surgeries were performed on Nasheed at ADK Hospital in Male'. Nasheed later traveled to Germany on May 13 for additional treatment, and he is currently recuperating from his injuries in the United Kingdom.
Nasheed's brother, Dr. Ibrahim Nashid told AVAS that Nasheed will not be able to return to the Maldives before the second term of the Parliament commences, stating that Nasheed has not properly healed from a knee injury sustained in the May 6 attack. However, Nasheed is expected to return in September although an exact date has not been decided thus far, said Nashid, adding that his brother has made significant progress in healing from his injuries.
The police have arrested 10 suspects linked to the May 6 blast. Among the first to be arrested were Adhuham Ahmed (25), Mujaz Ahmed (21), Thahmeen Ahmed (32) and Ahmed Fathih (23).
