Hiyaa flat rent cannot be negotiated: HDC

Managing Director of Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Ahmed Suhail has said no discussions are ongoing regarding reducing the rent of Hiyaa flats.

HDC has set the monthly rent of the Hiyaa flat units at MVR 7,500, with an additional monthly service fee of MVR 1,000. Flat recipients have been requesting the government to lower the rent as most cannot afford the charges. In this regard, members of the Hiyaa Union have been advocating to lower the rent to MVR 5,000 per month, with service fees of MVR 600.

Speaking at a press conference held Saturday, Suhail said the rent of the flats cannot be further negotiated and that it will remain at MVR 8,500. Suhail said eases cannot be provided in all aspects, but that the corporation is working to accommodate eases where possible. In this regard, all basic services will be available at the units by the time the units are ready for occupancy, he added.

The government has said it would extend the three-month grace period granted to complete the finishing works of the units until December 2021. With this change, rent will be charged from January 2022.
