The Parliament on Monday approved to appoint Ahmed Ahid Rasheed as the Information Commissioner.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih forwarded four names for parliament consideration after former Information Commission Hussain Fiyaz resigned from the post. Ahid was listed as the President's second choice for the post. However, after assessing the candidates, the Parliament's Independent Institutions Committee approved Ahid as its choice for the post, and forwarded the matter to the Parliament floor for voting.
During the vote taken on Monday, 49 members voted in favour of the appointment. No members voted against the appointment.
The Information Commissioner’s Office was established by the president on 13th July 2014 with the approval of the Parliament to uphold the right of the public interest of acquiring and dissemination of the information and to encourage the enforcement of open governance among the state institutions.
