Parliament approves Fiyaz as Information Commissioner

The Parliament has approved to appoint former journalist and CEO of Raajje TV Hussain Fiyaz Moosa as the Information Commissioner.

The parliament's Independent Authorities Committee submitted three names to the floor after evaluating the shortlist compiled by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. When asked to vote for the three individuals, Fiyaz received the highest number of votes with 72 member voting in his favor.

With a degree in Mass Communication, Fiyaz has 19 years of experience in journalism. He starting out his career in Aafathis News, and has worked for Miadhu and Haveeru News.

President Solih initially submitted four names for parliament consideration. The Independent Authorities Committee then shortlisted three candidates and sent the names to the parliament floor. Ahmed Fayaz and Ahmed Ahadh Rasheed were included in the shortlist in addition to Fiyaz.

The position of Information Commissioner became vacant when Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakuru completed his tenure in July. Since then, the position had remained unoccupied until now.

The Information Commissioner's Office is an independent body established on July 13, 2014. The office is tasked with removing all barriers to access to information from government offices and provide maximum opportunity for access to information.
