Speaker of the Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed has said it is best for all political parties to work together to reform the Constitution.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's parliament sitting, Nasheed said the Parliament continues to receive several requests from different parties seeking constitutional reform. The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has also received such a request, said Nasheed.
'I believe it is best for the country's citizens if all parties work together to bring reform to the constitution,' Nasheed said.
Nasheed further said the issues and contradictions in the new constitution ratified in 2018 have become clear over the past 13 years.
'My hope is to align Maldives' politics in such a way that it is most beneficial for the citizens, through the collective joint effort of political parties, ideologies and non-profit organizations and individuals', said Nasheed.
Nasheed, a vocal advocate to change the Maldives' government system from a presidential system to a parliamentary system, has been lobbying for the support of different political parties to achieve the change. Nasheed met with Jumhooree Party leader, Qasim Ibrahim as well as the newly established Maldives National Party (MNP) over the past two days. He has also attempted to address the matter with the opposing Progressive coalition.
